Game Overview
Lily's Purrspective is a 2D type-writing game where you play as hazel, a budding writer who has to pitch a draft to the publishing agents by the end of the the day while your cats demand for your attention. Your objective is to complete your novel draft and submit it by the end of the day while providing your cats the love and attention they need.
Give the cats the love and affection they demand for while they are awake with your mouse and type your novel using the keyboard, truly placing your multi-tasking skills to the test!
Learning Points
Different skill levels
When typing, not everyone types at the same speed. Some are relatively fast typers while some are on the other end of the spectrum when typing. When determining the length of the story that our designer should write, I ensured to account for the average typing speed of users in general to ensure that even if the player's typing speed is less than favorable, the player would still be able to complete the game with a little bit of time left on the clock.
Roles & Contributions
Solo Programmer
I was in charge of developing the technical features of the gameplay elements that was requested by the designers, primarily including a custom typing mechanic interface, custom csv data parser and state machines of the game state and the 2 respective cat states.
Custom Typing Mechanics
When implementing the typing, I had believed it was as simple as dealing with the TextMeshPro package and tinkering a little to achieve what I had wanted. Unfortunately, the default input fields didn't satisfy what I needed, and that I was required to have my own custom typing system to check for keyboard inputs in general.
State Machines
When integrating the cats into the game, I utilized state machines to ensure a structured code flow for both my cats when they run in the game. The two cats are set to wake up at different times, have different levels of maximum entertainment and have an ever-increasing rate of impatience that the player has to manage.
